Blogging is Going Places... and Doing Battle
The incomparable James Mirtle pointed out that USA Hockey has written about blogging and it's rapid popularity. This article puts a positive spin on hockey blogging and revisits the New York Islanders' Blog Box as they evaluate it's success over the last year.
One year ago, a Detroit News journalist roasted sports bloggers in an article that inspired this response. At the time (early November), the Blog Box was still a new experiment for the Islanders. They had only played seven home games, if I remember properly. So it's interesting to note that embracing the bloggers has worked out for them.
The other teams I looked at were the Caps and my own Ducks. As far as I know, the Capitals will continue to lead the way with their full-embracing of bloggers. The Ducks have not clarified whether or not their own no-blogger policy is facing changes in the near future.
But, on the flipside of things, doing battle in blogging isn't in reference to this media/blogger debate. It's actually in reference to why GwaP has gone *gasp* to moderated comments!
Oh, why, Finny, why? you wail.
Because, my loves-in-blogoland, there's a mean little poser that's usurped the place of a perfectly decent blogger (read: hacked into someone else's hockey blog) and has been leaving ugly, muddy footprints all over the comments section of a number of well-respected blogs including HLOG's own & USA Hockey's Top 10 pick DC Cheap Seats, HLOG itself, and a number of other female-run blogs. I understand that the women are not the only ones subjected to this comment abuse and usually I welcome challenging commentary. However, when the comments are rude, sexist, and done with the obvious attempt to try to redirect readership to their self-proclaimed superior hockey blog, I reserve the right to delete it.
Naturally, he came back and reposted essentially the same sexist commentary, so I decided -- to follow in the steps of HLOG -- to moderate comments until the abuse has subsided. After all, I'm all about the LOVE, and I'd rather not stir up the drama. It's just not worth it.
