Penner: a $21.5 million courtship begins...

Buh-bye, Pens?!

The heads up came from Cassie while I am -- still -- away at lunch. The relative quiet and unease surrounding Dustin Penner's signing has now exploded with the news that the Edmonton Oilers have sent out a $21.5 million offer sheet on his behalf.

Could it be that Pens will no longer be a Duckling? Could he be moving from the sand, surf, and sun to, um, play under intense pressure of having the hockey-obsessed Edmontonian public scrutinzation dissect his every stride? Can he thrive in that environment?

Because, ahem, I love Pens and all, but I don't think Burkie's going to be able to shell out a match. If he can't, it's g'bye Pens. And if he can... well, then I suspect Burkie's going to have to pull some Lamoriello skills and make that cap fit just so.

Watch for a "Penner, don't leave me" post to come up later. (Maybe... you know how I am).

UPDATE

The deal is set up to pay Pens $4.25 million per season. Penner's agent, apparently not Don Baizley as I thought before but Gerry Johannson, declined to comment until after the Ducks make a decision (which Burkie has yet to do).

1 cheers and jeers:

I'm so anxious to see if the Ducks match the offer! At this point, what does Finny's crystal ball say?
